Between 1945 and 1975 Indochina was racked by one of the longest and most bitter wars of the century. The battle for Vietnam drew in millions of soldiers - Vietnamese,French,American,Australian,Korean, and British and profoundly affected the lives of vast numbers of civilians. The American war which lasted from 1960 to 1975 was a conflict fought with extreme ferocity and destructiveness. There was on the ground a guerrilla war of firefights, search and destroy operations, and endless sieges. And also in the air was a war of extreme intensity.8 million tons of bombs wrought havoc on the landscape and people.

In early 1962 the helicopters sent to Vietnam by President Kennedy flew their first combat missions against the NLF.In Operation Chopper the aircraft flown by US Army pilots ferried thousands of South Vietnamese soldiers to sweep an NLF stronghold near Saigon. It was the beginning of a whole new phase of the conflict. From the start the American helicopters had a dramatic effect on the fighting.Government troops could take the guerrillas by surprise or cut off their line of retreat after a battle.Often they panic and were killed as they tried to escape. In the first months of 1962 the South Vietnamese Army won a string of victories badly shaking the NLF's moral.

In 1967 American forces in South Vietnam launched a series of powerful attacks on the Vietnamese Communist guerrillas. The aim was to take the war NLFs biggest units by attacking their bases in over whelming strength. The Americans hoped that the guerrillas would stand and fight. They could then annihilate them with vastly superior firepower. The offensives were designed to use the tactics of search and destroy on the grandest scale yet. Some of the biggest helicopter operations of the war were mounted to try and trap entire Vietcong regiments.More guns and aircraft were called in to support the attacks then had ever been unleashed on the Vietnam battlefield

For the Americans in South Vietnam 1966 was to be a year of dramatic expansion.US forces were planning to double to just under 430,000 men. While the build-up was going on the priority was to secure key parts of the country.By far the most important was the capitol - Saigon.Saigon was a teaming city of 2 million people. It was the seat of the South Vietnamese government. And the location of South Vietnamese and American military headquarters.Above all Saigon was the symbol of the Souths independence from the Communist rule. For the commanders of the Vietcong guerrillas the capitol was the ultimate prize. The tens of thousands of Vietcong, based within 50 miles of Saigon, were already drawing a noose tight around the city.Powerful guerrilla units were pushing right up to Saigons doorstep.

In Jan 1968 NLF guerrillas backed by the NVA launched a full scale offensive against the cities and towns of the South. For 2 years they had been cautious avoiding big battles. But at Tet,the Vietnamese New Year, they staked everything on one all out bid for victory. The Tet Offensive was one of the stunning surprise attacks ever launched by an army.More than 80,000 guerrillas and North Vietnamese troops were thrown against the forces of the South Vietnamese government and their American allies. The battles were on a scale that no one could have ever imagined the Viet Cong could achieve.

In April 1967 North Vietnamese Army units opened their biggest offensive of the Vietnam War.Their roll was to draw American forces into the remotest parts of South Vietnam far away from the populated areas. The hope was that the main attacks scheduled for early 1968 would find the Americans deployed in all the wrong places.Fighting began at the end of March when a strategic Marine patrol ran into an ambush near one of the strategic hills that lay between the fire bases of Khe Sanh and Con Thein.Dozens of Marines were killed in this first brief and unseen combat. The North Vietnamese had by then assembled nearly 2000 men near the base at Con Thein and almost everyday they hit the Marines with artillery, rockets, and mortars.

In early 1968 the US Marines fought the NVA in one of the most bitterly
contested battles of the Vietnam War.For 77 days 20,000 NVA troops laid
siege to the Marine Combat Base at Khe Sanh.At stake was the control
over the gateway to South Vietnam. The siege of Kha Sanh was the longest
single battle of the Vietnam War.It was also one of the most
    violent.There were savage artillery duels,mass infantry assaults,and
fierce hand-to-hand combat.Khe Sanh also saw the most concentrated
tactical bombing campaign in history as Americans used massed air power
to try and break the siege. The NVA meant their attack on Khe Sanh to
deliver a historic victory that would destroy the will of the US to
carry on the war.In fact,in spite of immense sacrifice the NVA would
    fail.

8-Battlefield Vietnam; Seige At Khe Sanh

The defense of the American combat base at Khe Sanh was given the code name "Operation Scotland".Khe Sanh was one of the most remote outposts in Vietnam but by Jan 1968 even the American President Lyndon Johnson had taken a personal interest. With the Marines facing a full scale siege by the North Vietnamese army the question was being asked "should the base be held or should it be quietly evacuated an abandoned?".Many in Washington worried the defending Khe Sanh could invite a costly and humiliating defeat.General Westmoreland,The US Commander in Vietnam, dismissed all such fears.Already Khe Sanh was tieing up nearly 20,000 NVA troops and their might be a chance at winning a US victory.

    9-Battlefield Vietnam; Air War Vietnam

From Feb 1965 to Nov 1968 the US waged a massive bombing campaign against North Vietnam.Operation Rolling Thunder sent US warplanes against heavily defended targets. It was a costly and destructive battle as both sides ever more sophisticated weapons and tactics. In Rolling Thunder US aircraft dropped over 650,000 tons of bombs on North Vietnam. There were also massive operations in South Vietnam supporting US ground troops and against communist supply lines and bases in Laos and Cambodia. The air war in Southeast Asia was more than a contest between the US and North Vietnam. From the start Americas Cold War enemies China and the Soviet Union were backing the North with weapons and advisers and support personnel. For US leaders that raised the most difficult question that they had ever faced.Could the air war be won without sparking off a wider and infinitely more dangerous conflict

    10-Battlefield Vietnam; Rolling Thunder

The US campaign against North Vietnams transport system began on April 3,1965.In a month long offensive Navy and Air Force planes hit bridges, road and rail junctions, truck parks, and supply depots. For the Americans one of the most important targets was the Ham Rung bridge across the Sung Ma River. The Bridge was a choke point for troops and supplies moving southwards. In spite of the repeated attempts the Americans failed to distroy the target, two US planes were lost to Mig fights and more to anti-aircraft defenses.Although the bombing was meant to the damage North Vietnamese military transport system it also had political aims - it was supposed to pressure the North to stop supporting guerrillas fighting in the South.

    11-Battlefield Vietnam; Peace With Honor

Between 1972 and 1975 the armies of North and South Vietnam clashed in some of the greatest battles of the Vietnam War.Twice in 3 years the government of the North launched full scale against the American backed South Vietnamese. What would have been a war of hit and run and ambush became one of huge set piece engagements between conventional armies. The South Vietnamese army backed by the US air power repelled the onslaught.Over North Vietnam the heaviest air strikes of the war came close to bringing the country to its knees but the Norths second great offensive proved unstoppable.

12-Battlefield Vietnam; The Fall Of Saigon

The end of the series.Goes into detail the political and military aspects that led to the US pull out of Vietnam and how even after the treaty and cease fire were agreed upon the NVA kept battling to regain as much land as possible in small skirmishes across the borders of the South and kept them to small skirmishes to keep the US from re-entering the war on the side of the South.
